Itinerary - 1

Today depart Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth for Malta. Fly with Emirates, Qatar Airways or Lufthansa, to name a few (subject to availability).

Please note: Some flights may depart very early the morning of Day 2. Flight times will be indicated in your final travel documentation 4 - 6 weeks prior to departure.

Meals included: In-Flight

On arrival today, be met and transferred to your waterfront hotel accommodation in picturesque Sliema, known for its numerous rocky beaches. Located on a peninsula across Marsamxett Harbour from Valletta, Sliema was once a quiet fishing village yet it now ranks as one of the country’s main coastal resorts. Malta's cool crowd flock here to eat, drink and shop and if you're looking for a base that mingles cosmopolitan sparkle with quiet backstreets, this is the perfect choice.

Lining the coastline is a promenade known as the Sliema Front, a popular meeting place for locals during the summer season and a common area for walkers and joggers. Romantic moon strolls, barbecues and open air restaurants and cafes have made Sliema the hub of social nightlife.

Overnight: Preluna Hotel, Sliema
Meals included: Breakfast

Today head out on a day tour of Valletta and Birgu. Malta’s capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site, Valletta is almost like a living, open-air museum. Throughout the years, the city has welcomed emperors, heads of state, artists and poets and is now the permanent seat of the Maltese government.

Dotted with quaint cafes and wine bars, the city is today one of Malta’s premier tourist destinations. During the tour the guide will walk you around Valletta to see the following sites: Upper Barrakka, Saluting Battery, Auberge de Castille, and St John’s Co Cathedral. Afterwards, enjoy some free time for lunch (not included). Then head down to the waterfront to board the Maltese Dghajsa (traditional water taxi) and enjoy a 30 minute harbour cruise before docking in one of Malta’s famous fortified Three Cities, Birgu.

The Three Cities is a collective description of the three fortified cities of Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua in Malta. The oldest of the Three Cities is Birgu, which has existed since the Middle Ages. The other two cities, Senglea and Cospicua, were both founded by the Order of Saint John in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Three Cities are enclosed by the Cottonera Lines, along with several other fortifications. On arrival in Birgu, enjoy a walking tour of this ancient town, before transferring back to your hotel at the end of the day for an evening at leisure.

Overnight: Preluna Hotel, Sliema
Meals included: Breakfast

After breakfast, meet the guide in the hotel lobby and transfer to Marsaxlokk – Malta’s fishing village. You can browse the open air market or buy some lovely souvenirs for family and friends back home. The next stop is the Blue Grotto, which is a number of sea caverns on the southern coast of Malta, west of the Wied iz-Żurrieq harbour. It is located right across the small uninhabited islet of Filfla. Every day from sunrise until about 1pm a unique sight can be observed here. The location of the cave, combined with the sunlight, lead to the water mirroring showing numerous shades of blue. Several caverns mirror the brilliant phosphorescent colours of the underwater flora; other caverns show a deep dark shade of blue. The Blue Grotto is a popular destination for tourists on the island of Malta. It was also used for a scene of the 2004 film Troy, starring Brad Pitt. Here enjoy a short boat trip. Afterwards transfer back to the hotel for the remainder of the day at leisure.

Overnight: Preluna Hotel, Sliema
Meals included: Breakfast

Today is free to explore this beautiful island at leisure. Alternatively, you can take part in an optional tour to the ‘Mdina, Rabat, Dingli Cliffs & Hagar Qim’.

Optional Activity - Mdina & Dingli Cliffs - $100 AUD per person
Approximately 10km from Valletta, Mdina is the old capital of Malta, whose earliest inhabitants date back to 4000 BC. The fortified and walled town is known as the ‘Silent City’ due to its quiet and narrow streets. Commanding a magnificent view of the Island, Mdina maintained a strategic position due to its central location, the highest point on the island, and its distance from the sea. Currently only city residents are allowed to bring their cars within the city gates, which lead to the calming effect described by many visitors. Mdina is definitely a pedestrian’s paradise.

Enjoy a guided walk through the city and visit its most famous site, the iconic St. Paul's Cathedral. The Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Paul is a Roman Catholic cathedral, dedicated to St. Paul the Apostle. The cathedral was founded in the 12th century, and according to tradition it stands on the site of where Roman governor Publius met Saint Paul following his shipwreck on Malta. The original cathedral was severely damaged in the 1693 Sicily earthquake; it was dismantled and rebuilt in the Baroque style to a design of the Maltese architect Lorenzo Gafà between 1696 and 1705. The cathedral is regarded as Gafà's masterpiece.

A short drive from Mdina you will find Dingli Cliffs. The cliffs are located off the village of Dingli, on Malta’s Western coast. They stage the highest point of the Maltese Islands at around 253 metres above sea-level. Breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea - The cliffs propose a majestic sight, particularly if viewed from a boat while cruising, but also from the top - the views are breathtaking, overlooking the small terraced fields below, the open sea, and Filfla, the small uninhabited island just across. The cliffs can be seen as natural forts, since no attacker can approach the island from the West given their impressive height. There is a statue dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene perched on the tiny chapel edge, marking the highest point on the Maltese Islands.

Finish the day back at the hotel where you may enjoy an afternoon and evening at leisure.

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction in which he or she is guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves the group at the end of the tour, they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides in each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village, and offer information on the place visited on the bus, however they are not required to have specific knowledge on art, architecture, or history. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when particularly required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

Supplier Fees
In the event the Travel Offer you have purchased is unable to proceed, and/or a travel Supplier is unable to fulfil the Travel Offer due to external circumstances (Limitation of Liability e.g. a Force Majeure event), there may be a fee or amount of money that is withheld by our Suppliers and is unrecoverable. This may be due to non-refundable airline tickets, cancellation penalties with cruise cabins or unrecoverable payments with our land/accommodation partners. TripADeal has committed to these costs as your Agent and will endeavour to recover all funds committed and/or paid for your Travel Offer, but this may not be possible in all circumstances. If refunds are not available from Suppliers, we will endeavour to obtain a travel credit on the best terms available and communicate these outcomes to you. In the event, TripADeal is unable to obtain a refund or travel service credit, or part thereof, this cost is passed on to the customer as a Supplier Fee. This fee is not revenue-raising and is paid to or withheld by our suppliers when recovering payments.
