After breakfast this morning, set out on a city highlights bus tour. See major sights such as Leningradsky Avenue, Tverskaya Street, Teatralny Passage, the KGB building, Novodevichy Convent, and Manezh Square. Following the bus tour, relax with free time at the Red Square, where you can marvel at the St. Basil’s Cathedral (entrance not included), one of the most recognisable monuments in Russia. This afternoon, enjoy lunch at an inner-city restaurant.

The tour then continues with a visit to the Kremlin, which translates to ‘fortress inside a city’ and is the official residence of the President of Russia. It is a true fortified town harbouring its own squares, churches and cathedrals. The Kremlin is still open for visitors and is consistently one of the most visited landmarks, despite the fact it’s still the residence of the Russian Government.

Overnight: Renaissance Monarch Hotel or similar, Moscow
Meals included: Breakfast;Lunch

Today is free at leisure, alternatively you may take part in an optional tour (not included).

Optional Activity: Tretyakov Gallery & Arbat Street - $100 per person

The Tretyakov Gallery houses one of the world’s most celebrated and extensive collections of Russian art and artefacts. The gallery was named after the entrepreneur Pavel Tretyakov, who donated approximately 2000 works of Russian art from his own private collection to the city of Moscow at the end of the 19th century. Exhibition halls feature icons (most notably an impressive collection of icons by the artist Andrei Rublev), 18th century portraits, Realist works, Romantic, Symbolist and avant-garde canvases and displays of graphic and applied arts. A visit to the Tretyakov Gallery is a definite must for anyone interested in Russian art and culture.

You will also get the opportunity to take a walk along the Arbat, Moscow’s most charming and lively pedestrian street. Once a bohemian quarter of the city, littered with cafes crammed full of the capital’s intellectual elite, the Arbat still retains a vibrant and artistic air today, with souvenir stalls selling traditional Russian gifts, artists offering original canvases and street performers entertaining the shoppers. At the western end of the Arbat visitors cannot fail to notice the imposing Gothic facade of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building, constructed to celebrate the economic and engineering prowess and achievements of the Soviet regime.

Optional Activity: Moscow By Night & Moscow Metro - $90 per person
Moscow becomes another city with the setting sun. The illumination of its buildings, parks and monuments is a splendid view to see. Explore the Red Square, the heart of Moscow, the lively Tverskaya Street with its numerous shops, cafes, bars and restaurants; and Victory Park – a huge park-memorial to the Russian glorious victory in the war against the Nazi Germany, decorated with the endless chain of fountains, bathed in red light at night.

You will also enjoy a glimpse into the surprisingly opulent world of the city’s underground Metro system. The stations of Moscow’s subway system have often been called ‘the people’s palaces’, for their elegant designs and profuse use of marble, mosaics, sculptures and chandeliers. Built during Stalin’s rule, these metro stations were supposed to display the best of Soviet architecture and design, as well as show how privileged the lives of Russian people were. The Arbatskaya, Smolenskaya and Ploschad Revolutsii statsions are incredible. The last, in particular, abounds with 76 magnificent bronze figures of the creators of the new socialist order, nestled into niches between the station’s broad columns.

Overnight: Renaissance Monarch Hotel or similar, Moscow
Meals included: Breakfast

After breakfast, be transferred to the airport for your domestic flight to Astrakhan. Upon arrival, be transferred to your hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Astrakhan is home to a portion of the great Silk Road, a network of ancient trade paths that were once the main passage connecting the East to the West. One of the various ways to pass through Asia into Europe is through southern Russia, which is full of dramatic scenery that still remains untouched to this day. As the Silk Route snakes through Russia, it meanders into southern Siberia and then across to the region’s southwest. Between southern Siberia and the North Caucasus, lies the Republic of Kalmykia, the only Buddhist republic in Russia. The Silk Road truly unveils the natural beauty and unique culture of the Republic, perfect for intrepid travellers.

The Sarykum is 12km long, 4km wide and 2.5km high. Its age is unknown but this piece of the Sahara Desert in the heart of the Dagestan mountains is definitely more than a few hundred thousand years old.

The journey to the Sulak Canyon is a wonderful experience. If you stand on the cliff above the canyon you will see the bright azure colour of the Sulak River, with a cascade of hydropower plants, far below. It is truly a landscape of incomparable beauty.
