Australia and New Zealand debate about a lot of things, but there is one thing we can both agree on - New Zealand’s awe-inspiring scenery is truly like nowhere else on earth. The soaring mountains, the plunging fjords, the vast grasslands plucked straight out of Middle Earth… it’s breathtaking.

Sail into Queen Charlotte Sound this morning, to dock in Picton. Akaroa is a large township nestled into the Banks Peninsula of the Canterbury Coast. Heavily influenced by the French, the picturesque town is surrounded by clear seas home to abundant wildlife including Hector’s Dolphin, seals and penguins. The Peninsula is renowned for its vineyards and farms, with many artisans outlets, stores and restaurants waiting to be discovered.

Dock today in Port Chalmers and enjoy the scenic, winding road around Otago Harbour to the city of Dunedin. Heavily influenced by the Scots who settled the area, Dunedin has a European feel and the oldest parts of the city were modelled directly on Edinburgh. Day trips are plentiful in the region, including harbour boat rides, city tours and the enormously popular vintage Taieri Gorge scenic train.

The ‘Celebrity Solstice’ cruises through the famous fjords of the South Island today, starting in outstanding Dusky Sound, with its misty densely bush-covered sides. Later, Doubtful Sound unfolds, still and uniquely comprised of both fresh and seawater eco-systems, due to the huge amount of rainwater that streams into the Sound from the abundant waterfalls. Finally, sail into Milford Sound, overshadowed by huge dramatic cliffs, often with snow visible on the nearby mountain peaks.
