This morning visit Oak Alley Plantation, a historic plantation located on the west bank of the Mississippi River. Oak Alley is named for its distinguishing visual feature, an alley (French allée) or canopied path, created by a double row of southern live oak trees about 240 metres long, planted in the early 18th century — long before the present house was built. The allée or tree avenue runs between the home and the river. The property was designated a National Historic Landmark for its architecture and landscaping, and for the agricultural innovation of grafting pecan trees, performed here in 1846–47 by an enslaved gardener. Then drive to New Orleans. Known as the 'Big Easy', New Orleans's eclectic mix of European, Creole and Cajun culture manifests itself in every aspect of the architecture, cuisine and music scene.

As you ride through the French Quarter, admire the sights, smells and sounds of the city’s cultural hub, where Spanish, French, Creole and American styles blend in an enchanting setting. See Louisiana’s Cabildo and Presbytere museums and the Pontalba Apartments, the oldest apartment buildings in the United States! Pass by the square’s historic open‐air artist colony as you make your way to one of New Orleans’ famous ‘Cities of the Dead’ to experience the bewitching and spectacular mausoleum system. Revel in tales of New Orleans’ illicit and mysterious history from your local guide as you travel to Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, the world’s longest over‐water bridge. Hear of piracy and voodoo on Bayou St John, a known pirate waterway and the reputed location of voodoo rituals by the infamous Marie Laveau. Then return to town along the world‐famous St Charles Streetcar route, passing through the extravagant Garden District. Snap photos of opulent mansions that served as former residences for the kings and queens of Mardi Gras, admire the beauty of Tulane and Loyola Universities and see the acclaimed Audubon Zoo. This Leeward island has been famously bisected into French and Dutch territories since 1648, and is referred to both as Saint Martin and Sint Maarten. In their respective capitals—Marigot and Philipsburg—there are ancient stone forts and candy-coloured buildings lining winding streets. The Dutch side has a slightly larger population but is a bit smaller, at 34 square kilometres. Named for its founder John Philips, Philipsburg, the capital of the Dutch side, has some excellent international art galleries, thumping discos and popular casinos. Farther afield are beautiful beaches and a seemingly endless array of nature conservancies.

San Juan is one of the world’s top cruise ship destinations, with most of the pleasure boats docking at the port by the old town. As recently as the 1970s, Old San Juan (Viejo San Juan) was a reminder of better times, a run-down collection of Spanish colonial relics, in little better shape than the collapsed empire that constructed them. Now, however, after extensive and careful restoration, this seven-block-square area is considered one of the best-kept troves of Spanish colonial architecture and has become a World Heritage Site.
