The crater is in the middle of a vast lava field and from the top you will have superb views of the beautiful landscape.

In the afternoon you will visit a natural history and seal museum in a small fishing village in Northwest Iceland, and also stroll around the local harbour. Further north, stop at the turf church of Víðimýri, which has been extensively restored to its original form. It is widely considered one of the purest and most beautiful examples of traditional Icelandic architecture. Then continue along the scenic fjord landscape and over several mountain passes until you reach Akureyri, the capital of North Iceland.

Overnight: Icelandair Hotel or similar, Akureyri
Meals included: Breakfast

This morning explore Akureyri, a charming town of 17,000 inhabitants. Visit the botanical gardens and enjoy the panoramic view over Eyjafjörður Fjord. In the afternoon travel to spectacular Goðafoss, the waterfall of the Gods. Then continue onto Lake Mývatn which is known for its geological wonders and active bird life during the summer. The lake's unique features have been shaped by nature - strange lava formations, many kinds of volcanic craters and beautiful bays filled with thousands of birds and ducks. Stop at the bizarre lava formations at Kálfaströnd followed by a walk around the many pseudo craters. Stroll through the mysterious lava field of Dimmuborgir and see the tephra cone Hverfjall.

End an exciting day with a relaxing soak at Mývatn Nature Baths which contain a unique blend of minerals, silicates and geothermal micro-organisms. The warm, soothing waters benefit both skin and spirit alike.

Overnight: Sel-Hotel Mývatn or similar, Húsavík Area

This morning enjoy a walk in a lava labyrinth at Dimmuborgir "the dark castles" and try and get a glimpse of the trolls who are said to live there. After lunch (not included), you will see the hot springs area of Námaskarð with bubbling mud pools and steaming solfataras. Then head through the uninhabited highlands and moon-like surroundings to East Iceland. With some luck, you might spot an arctic fox or reindeer.

This afternoon you will see Vatnajökull – one of Europe's biggest glaciers that is visible all over Southeast Iceland. Past the town of Höfn, stop at Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon filled with floating icebergs. Explore the extraordinary site and look for seals swimming in the arctic waters. Walk on the black sandy beach, where large icebergs often get stranded. Depending on the season, you can take the opportunity to join an optional boat trip (not included). Travel along the southern part of the Vatnajökull glacier and spend some time in the national park, which has Iceland's highest mountains and an alpine environment.

Overnight: Icelandair Hotel Klaustur OR Hotel Höfn, Kirkjubæjarklaustur
Meals included: Breakfast

A beautiful drive with many natural wonders awaits you today, as you head across the Eldhraun lava field and cross the sandy desert of the south coast, overlooked by rugged cliffs, glaciers and waterfalls. The world-famous Reynisfjara shore, near the village Vík, is widely regarded as the most impressive black sand and pebble beach in Iceland and features an amazing cliff of regular basalt columns resembling a rocky step pyramid. Out in the sea are the spectacularly shaped basalt sea stacks Reynisdrangar. In the small village of Skógar, you will see Skógafoss waterfall, which is 62m high and is one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country.

Further west you will stop at the Eyjafjallajökull Information Centre and learn about living next to a glacier and an active volcano. Continue to see the 65m high but narrow Seljalandsfoss waterfall, which plunges over the mountain. There is an interesting trail that goes behind the falls – if you are prepared to get wet!

Overnight: Icelandair Hotel Flúðir or Hotel Eyjafjallajökull or Hotel Fljótshlíð, Flúðir or Hlíðarendi Area

Explore the classics today as you travel the route of the Golden Circle. Start the day at Friðheimar, where you will learn about the Icelandic horse, its unique qualities, history and you will also visit a geothermal greenhouse. Later on, you will see steam from the Geysir geothermal fields. There is a variety of hot springs and bubbling pools. The Strokkur geysir, known as "the Churn", erupts at 5-10 minute intervals.

Continue to Gullfoss, "the golden falls", which is a double waterfall that tumbles 34m into the Hvítá River and attracts travellers all year round. Venture inland to Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site and an area of exceptional geological and historical interest. The Þingvellir area is part of a fissure zone running through Iceland, situated on the tectonic plate boundaries of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The faults and fissures make evident the rifting of the earth's crust. Return to Reykjavík and enjoy a short city tour of the highlights of the world's northernmost capital.

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction in which he or she is guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves the group at the end of the tour, they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides in each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village, and offer information on the place visited on the bus, however they are not required to have specific knowledge on art, architecture, or history. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when particularly required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.
